Google Now Puts Links Higher in AI Answers. Write Posts the Answer Can Link To.
Google's October 15 update surfaces inline links higher and more frequently inside AI Overviews and AI Mode responses [1]. That sounds like good news for publishers, but a citation in the footnotes is not a link in the answer, and a link in the answer is not a click. The change rewards a specific kind of writing: named, dated, linkable claims that give the AI a reason to attach your paragraph mid-sentence.

- A citation in the footnotes is not a link in the answer, and a link in the answer is not a click. [1] [2]

- Industry analysts estimate AI summaries cut publisher traffic 20% to 60%, and Google has published no evidence the inline links restore that traffic. [4]
- 88%of AI summaries cited three or more sources (Pew, March 2025 browsing data, 900 U.S. adults) [2]

Three signals you are not measuring the same thing
Pew Research Center analysis of March 2025 browsing data from 900 U.S. adults found that 88% of AI summaries cited three or more sources, yet users clicked a traditional search result in only 8% of visits with an AI summary—down from 15% when no summary appeared [2]. Clicks inside the AI summary itself happened in just 1% of visits [2]. Worse, 26% of users ended their session entirely after seeing an AI summary, versus 16% without one [2]. Wikipedia, YouTube, and Reddit alone accounted for 15% of the sources listed in AI summaries [2].
Why named, dated figures earn inline links
An AI answer links to a paragraph when it can attribute a specific claim to a specific source. Evergreen generalizations—"many marketers struggle with attribution"—give the AI nothing to anchor a link to. A dated statistic with a named source creates a linkable unit the AI can cite in place.
Write "Retail media ad spend grew 22% in 2024, per a named analyst forecast" and the AI has a claim, a figure, a date, and a source to wrap a link around. Write "retail media is growing fast" and it does not.
How to write paragraphs that get linked mid-sentence
- One claim per paragraph. Dense prose forces the AI to paraphrase or skip.
- Put the figure in the first sentence. Lead with the concrete, not the setup.
- Name the source in the sentence itself, not only in a footnote. "According to McKinsey's 2024 report" beats a bare number with a superscript.
- Use a dated statistic rather than an evergreen generalization. "In Q2 2026" gives the AI a timestamp to cite.
- Ship structured data at publish time so the machine can verify the claim against your markup.
Please note: Search Console reports all AI Overview links as the same position, so higher inline placement does not change reported rank [3].

The honest limit: links are a floor, not a recovery
Industry analysts estimate AI search summaries reduce publisher traffic 20% to 60%, costing roughly $2 billion a year in ad revenue [4]. Google has published no evidence that these inline links restore that traffic. Pew's data and referral trends suggest in-answer links are defensive, protecting baseline visibility rather than replacing lost clicks. Treat them accordingly.
